In unprecedented ranking result, Bananas and Dogs favored long term by the data - but will future results prove it?
The season has gotten off to a strange start. What began as a level of league parity not seen since the strike of 1993 quickly shifted into a week 2 overloaded with blowouts, and a week 3 marked by tough losses from well-performing squads.
It was a shaky beginning to the season for the Wiener Dogs, as they dropped two consecutive series 4-5 to begin the 2026 campaign, against the Knicks and the Sturgeons respectively, and it appeared as though they would drop further down the hole by Wednesday when they trailed the Bananas, 2-7. But strong outings by Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger flipped the script, taking the Dogs to a 6-3 lead by Sunday. The Bananas, stole a win back due to a furious outing by Framber Valdez and held a tight series loss to 4-5.
"We just need to shake off the loss and move onto the next series," Bananas outfielder Jo Adell said. "They came out firing and we were playing catch-up when it was too late. Just need to pick our chins up when we head to the Bronx today and take a big win over Russo." Adell led the Bananas's HR column with 2 dingers this week.
In a previously unseen circumstance, both teams in the Game of the Week ended up atop the first 2026 Power Ranks, both teams with sub-.500 records.
They're just underneath .500 to start the campaign, but the numbers don't lie. 1st leaguewide in Runs, 3rd in HR, 2nd in OBP; 1st in ERA, 1st in WHIP, 2nd in Ks. If the performance keeps up, the results will shift soon.
Largely the same story as the Dogs here. Perhaps the best pitching staff in the league with high numbers across both starters and relief, and the best OBP and SB numbers in town. Ignore the rocky start. They're hunting a repeat championship and everyone should bring their A-game when squaring off against them.
Last year's Parade Ground champions are in 1st in the division again so far, and with good reason. Most RBIs by a longshot and the most Ks of any pitching staff, though the bullpen leaves a bit to be desired. Their biggest weakness has been OBP, but that didn't much matter as they dominated Russo Bakery 7-2.
Always a powerhouse, and destined to be one again, the Crackers are the evil empire of the PPBL, and they've come out firing, going 20-6-1 in the first three weeks of play, harangued only by poor pitching, which may make future series wins tougher to come by.
Newly minted GM Pat Coyne took a beating from his mentor Drew Lang, dropping the series 1-7-1, but he's proven thus far in the raw numbers that the era of The Bums is behind this team. So far the numbers have been sustainable, and may just be playoff worthy down the line. Rumors of peptide use in the clubhouse are perhaps exaggerated and, as Coyne said in an interview on the subject, "Unfounded."
Just like last year, this is a winning team that I'm surprised isn't doing even better than they are, and one that the data is bearish on. The hitting numbers are performing as any team with Aaron Judge leading it might expect, but the real weakness here is pitching, where they are last in SVs and last in WHIP.
The worst record of any team to start the campaign, but as GM Nick Cummings has said in pressers, "We just gotta get healthy." All hope is not lost on this squad, but the K totals suggest a lack of volume indicative of being hampered by injury. Plenty of time to turn it around, but the boys from the Bronx have dug a tough hole in April.
2nd best ERA in the league, but not much else to celebrate in the Hudson River so far this season. A victory against the Dogs in week 2 shows this squad is competitive, but inconsistent. A battle with the Bagel Bites may be what they need to instill some confidence.
It seems every year that Rollers ownership forgets about the season until Week 3, when they make a handful of whip smart transactions all at once, and then proceed to pick up some wins. They've done it again this year, taking a victory off the Sturgeon in Week 3, but can it continue?
"We're just missing the hot streaks," says GM Suze Myers. "We've been benching guys when they get hot and starting guys when they go cold. We're gonna have to figure this out if we want a shot this year." Last year's hottest team to begin the season had a rough go of it in the summer months, finishing out of playoff contention in the end. Perhaps this season will be reverse? Last to first? Only time will tell, but the manager is on the hot seat with fans this year.
